About our Classes

Our philosophy: At Corta Jaca Dance we believe that dancing should be fun and not taken too seriously, although correct technique is always emphasized in order to make each dance easier to accomplish and, therefore, more enjoyable. This includes instruction on leading and following, as well as lots of useful hints and tips, to build both confidence and competence.

With this in mind, our classes are suitable for all levels of dancer, from the beginner who has never danced before, to the more experienced dancer who wishes to master correct technique as well as learn new steps and figures.

Beginners: We encourage you to learn a variety of dances, both to make it more interesting and to help you to become a better all round dancer. We will teach you the basic steps in each dance - not so many that you cannot remember them, but enough to make the dance varied and interesting. We will also teach you some basic technique to give you a good grounding in each dance, and to make it more like a dance than just simply steps to music.

Intermediate dancers: The class is based on teaching a short sequence of steps and figures which can easily be incorporated into existing dance patterns. Practice time is programmed with both classes.

The classes: Deliberately kept small, our classes allow plenty of time for personal attention. They are held on a large dance floor in a friendly atmosphere, giving dancers lots of space to move around. We do not commit you to specific weeks, so if you miss a class you can easily catch up.

We believe in a two way dialogue with students and encourage both questions and suggestions at any time. If there is a particular step or figure you wish to learn or revise, we will do our best to accommodate your request.

For competitors: We engage in practices which are ethical and developmentally appropriate, and that support the physical, psychological, social and emotional welfare of all participants during coaching, practices and competitions. We prioritize personal development over performance excellence.

Our commitment to inclusion: Everyone is welcome at Corta Jaca Dance, where we provide encouragement and positive support for all. We are proud to provide accessible and inclusive classes in a safe and supportive environment regardless of color, ethnicity, language, age, beliefs, physical or intellectual ability, or gender identity or expression. Persons who identify or express themselves as LGBTIQA2S+ are welcomed without prejudice, judgement or question.

Note: LGBTIQA2S+ includes lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, questioning, asexual, 2-spirit, + many other terms (such as non-binary and pansexual).
